Heavy rain hits PAD at Government House; students march to Democracy Monument
BANGKOK, Sept 6 (TNA) - Heavy downpours in Bangkok affected the movements of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) encamped in the Government House compound for the past 12 days, as a blackout also halted its activities on the stage.
Anti-government students gathered at Makhawan Rangsan Bridge on
Ratchadamneon Nok Avenue to add their demand for the resignation of Prime
Minister Samak Sundaravej.
From Makhawan Bridge, thousands of students marched to the Democracy
Monument. The heavy rain almost forced them to delay or cancel the plan,
but they kept going until they reached their goal. After reading their
demands at the historic site, they dispersed.
The students said they came from 80 institutions nationwide and that they
would also stop attending classes under civil disobedience, demanding PM
to listen to the voilce of majority and decide to resign.
Earlier in the day, a group of students and teachers from Chulalongkorn
University, all wearing pink shirts, also gathered at Ratchadamnern and
issued a statement calling for the prime minister to resign and revoke the
State of Emergency Decree.
Meanwhile, retired Maj-Gen. Chamlong Srimuang, a core leader of the PAD,
reiterated that his group would not negotiate with anybody unless Prime
Minister Samak and his coalition government resign first.
Senate Speaker Prasopsuk Boondej had not yet discussed with the group on
finding ways to resolve political turbulence in Thailand, he said.
He added that no plan to organise a demonstration against the cabinet
meeting in Udon Thani has been done, but that he would let the PAD
supporters in the province to decide whether to hold a rally.
He also recommended that PAD in Udon Thani request security protection
from the police to prevent any clash against the pro-government group that
may happen.
If any violence happens, he said, the PAD in Bangkok could not bear any
responsibility.
However, the leader of PAD in Udon Thani issued a statement calling on the
government to cancel its plan to hold a cabinet meeting in the province on
Tuesday, saying that the move may lead to a clash between pro- and anti-
government supporters.
A group of farmers calling themselves the Northeastern Farmer Group who
joined the protest at Government House have planted rice in the lawn at
the Thai Koo Fah Building.
Six bundles of Chainat strain rice seedings were transplanted in the
4-by-4 metre area to symbolize fighting until victory is achieved.
