Thai exporters urged to explore China's halal market
BANGKOK, May 17 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Commerce's Department of Export Promotion has urged Thai exporters to explore China's promising halal food market, noting that international trade in the special food products permitted to global Muslim consumers has now exceeded 2.1 trillion US dollars.
The department's director general, Nantawan Sakultanak, acknowledged today that China's halal food producers are small-scaled firms whose products have little value added and lack branding and technology to push their goods to international standards; so it should be a good opportunity for Thai halal entrepreneurs to penetrate the huge Chinese market.
Nantawan said, quoting statistics from the Islamic Association of China, that the Chinese halal market's growth rate should be over 20 per cent annually and the trade value of halal food in China amounts to some 2.1 billion US dollars yearly.
As China's regions are different and complex, as well as highly competitive, the senior Thai official suggested, however, that Thai entrepreneurs learn the differences and the Chinese government's policy on the local halal sector to prepare their marketing strategies accordingly, while their products should also have outstanding selling points to reach to Chinese customers.
The senior Thai Commerce Ministry official also advised that an important factor obliging Thai exporters of halal food products is securing an official halal certification.
China has 55 main ethnic minorities, ten of which are Muslim, accounting about 22 million. The Hui people are the biggest Islamic group in China.(TNA)
