Thailand-Laos to step up cross-border cooperation

BANGKOK, May 16 (TNA) - Thailand and Laos have agreed to further strengthen cross-border cooperation through the expansion of bilateral businesses and other activities.

Thai Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot reported the positive development on Monday, saying that it resulted from a latest discussion between Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and the Lao leader Thongsing Thammavong on the sidelines of the 18th ASEAN Summit, held in Jakarta early this month.

Alongkorn noted that the Thai and Lao leaders agreed that the opening of the 3rd Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge linking Thailand's northeastern Nakhon Phanom with Laos' Kammuan area on November 11 this year, the 4th Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge linking Thailand's Chiang Khong District of the northern Chiang Rai Province with Laos' Huayxay area was expected to soon follow, will be part of two countries' increased cross-border cooperation to sustain their border peace and friendship, as a good model for other countries.

Speaking of another step of strengthening of Thai-Lao cooperation, Alongkorn said, earlier this year, the two counties' private sectors agreed at their “Business Summit” in the Laotian capital of Vientiane to hold joint trade exhibitions at least once a year, to issue the Thai-Lao Business Card to facilitate their cross-border business transactions and to set up SMEs Clinics at all bordering provinces on both sides to promote small and medium-sized businesses across the common border.
