Active Thai-Lao border trade resumes

NAKHON PHANOM, May 16 (TNA) - Active border trade between Thailand and Laos has now resumed, thanks to rising water levels in the Mekong River due to seasonal downpours.

Transport of cargoes between the two countries has been resumed following months of drought--which heavily reduced the water levels in the bordering river. Reports said that the water level of the Mekong River was measured at 2.33 metres in Thailand's northeastern Nakhon Phanom Province on Sunday, an increase of some 16 centimetres from the day before.

The Meteorological Department’s Nakhon Phanom office has forecast heavy rainfalls in Thailand's Northeast from May 14-20 due to a high-pressure ridge covering the northern parts of the country. In Nakhon Phanom alone, rainfalls are expected to cover 60 per cent of the province. (TNA)
