Pheu Thai Party urged to nominate a female prime minister candidate

BANGKOK, May 15 (TNA) - As Thai political parties are selecting their candidates for the general election on July 3, the opposition Pheu Thai Party receives support for its nomination of Miss Yingluck Shinawatra, a younger sister of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, as a female prime minister candidate. The support comes from the people who used to work closely with Thaksin.
Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan, a former key figure of the now-defunct Thai Rak Thai Party, said Thailand never had a female candidate for the prime minister’s seat before and this highlighted the political progress of women. She noted that women were outstanding for their compromising nature, hard work, honesty and care for the future of the nation.
Khunying Sudarat who used to work closely with Thaksin refused to comment on the report that Thaksin is making his movements near Thailand. She also declined to comment on the next rally of pro-Thaksin red shirt protesters on May 19 which will mark the first anniversary of a crackdown on red shirt protesters at Ratchaprasong intersection in Bangkok last year.
Meanwhile, Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, former prime minister and former chair of the Pheu Thai Party, supported Pracharaj Party leader Sanoh Thienthong’s return to the Pheu Thai Party. Gen Chavalit said Mr Sanoh shared a political stance with the Pheu Thai Party and his return would further strengthen the party. Gen Chavalit said he would continue to help the Pheu Thai Party in although he already resigned as the Party chair. He vowed to help the party push for peaceful changes in the nation. (TNA)
