Merger of ministries, a resolved issue: Larijani
TEHRAN, May 15 (MNA) – Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has said that the issue merging ministries has been resolved after his recent meeting with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad which was attended by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
“This meeting was held in attendance of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, and in our view, the issue of the merger of ministries has been resolved and there is no problem,” Larijani told the Fars news agency on Saturday.
The remarks came after it was reported on Saturday that Ahmadinejad has removed three ministers from office apparently to pave the way for the hotly disputed merger of ministries.
In separate letters, the president thanked Oil Minster Masoud Mirkazemi, Industries and Mining Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian, and Welfare Minister Sadeq Mahsouli for their great efforts and sincere services to the country and announced the end of their terms in office.
On May 9, the cabinet approved the merger of eight ministries into four ministries, a measure which provoked widespread criticism from the lawmakers.
The cabinet’s ratification envisages the merger of the Transport Ministry with the Housing Ministry, Industries and Mining Ministry with the Commerce Ministry, the Energy Ministry with the Oil Ministry, and the Welfare Ministry with the Labor Ministry.
The lawmakers said the parliament should approve the merger of ministries, but the administration insisted that its decision does not need the parliament’s approval.
On May 10, Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said the merger of ministries without the parliament’s approval is illegal. He also said that the ministers should continue their job and the administration should submit a bill to the Majlis for the merger of ministries.
Later, the Guardian Council confirmed Larijani’s remarks and announced that the merger of ministries requires the parliament’s approval according to the Constitution.
MP Ahmad Tavakkoli has criticized the president’s decision, saying, “Removing ministers is not in contravention of the law but is not in national interests in the current situation.”
The simultaneous removal of three ministers gives out a signal to the society and the international community that the country is unstable, he told the Mehr News Agency on Saturday.
