Thailand-Laos mark 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations

BANGKOK, May 14 (TNA) - Representatives of Thailand and Laos on Saturday paid homage to Phra That Sri Song Rak, a symbol of bilateral friendship, to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two close neighbouring countries.
Authorities in Dan Sai District of Thailand's northeastern Loei Province organized the worship of the pagoda and other activities, from May 14-17, to celebrate the Thai-Lao established relations and the 450th anniversary of the pagoda.
Loei Governor Pornsak Jiaranai inaugurated the morning event, in which Deputy Lao minister of information and culture Borsangkam Wongdala, who is also chairman of the Laos-Thailand Friendship Association, and Thai and Lao ambassadors also took part.
On Sunday (May 15), there will be the “Kayasin” performance of Laos, as well as a ceremony to pay homage to the pagoda.
On May 16, the general public and tourists, including those from Laos, will be allowed to pay respect to the pagoda and there will be a ceremony for people to be ordained at Wat Ponechai Temple.
On May 17, there will be an alms-giving ceremony at the same temple, as well as ceremonies to worship, offer sacrifices and clean the pagoda and candle-lit procession, traditional rocket launches and an ordination ceremony.
The construction of the Phra That Sri Song Rak pagoda started in 1560 and was completed in 1563. It has been a place of worship for Thai and Lao people. It symbolizes friendship and sincerity between King Maha Chakrapad of Thailand's Ayutthaya Kingdom and Phra Chao Chaichetthathirat, the King at Sri Satana Khanahut (Vientiane) of the Lanchang Kingdom. Both kings had the pagoda built and promised to stop battles between both lands and promote bilateral relations. Celebrations for the pagoda are set on the full moon day of the sixth lunar month every year. (TNA)
