Ruling Democrat Party welcomes Thailand's first female PM candidate

BANGKOK, May 13 (TNA) - Thailand's ruling Democrat Party announced Friday that it is welcoming Yingluck Shinawatra, younger sister of exiled ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra, to politics and the national polls as the country's first female prime minister candidate. She is running for the Thaksin-backed Puea Thai Party.
Democrat Party Spokesman Dr. Buranat Samutarak congratulated Ms. Yingluck, on behalf of all Thai Democrats, on her successful election as the top Puea Thai party-list candidate although she has not yet been the party's leader.
However, the Democrat spokesman called for the Puea Thai Party to stop organising or supporting mass red-shirt rallies and to review its policy to bring back home Thaksin without the obligation of a judicial case in order to avoid triggering any repeated political unrest and strife in the country.
The spokesman's comments came in response to recent confirmation from the red-shirts that they will stage a mass political gathering on May 19 to mark the first anniversary of the Democrat Party-led government's bloody crackdowns on red-shirt protesters last year.
Meanwhile, Democrat Party Deputy Spokesman Dr. Warong Dejkitwikrom said that Thailand's forthcoming general election appears to be a premiership-style competition between the now caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and Ms. Yingluck. (TNA)
