Political parties actively gear up for Thailand's next election

BANGKOK, May 13 (TNA) - Thai political parties are actively gearing up for the election which is set to go ahead July 3.

On Friday, Sanoh Thienthong, leader of the Pracharaj Party, may announce a decision to join the Pheu Thai Party. Five key figures of the Pheu Thai Party, led by party leader Yongyut Wichaidit, had reportedly held a lunch meeting with Mr Sanoh to invite him to join their party.

Unofficial reports have suggested that he will indeed leave his current position as Pracharaj Party leader to join the Pheu Thai Party.

Separately, Deputy Prime Minister and Democrat Party secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban said the invitation did not worry him but that he was concerned for Mr Sanoh who was being pulled by several parties. Mr Suthep added that he was not bothered at all about the selection of the party' number one candidate. Miss Yingluck Shinawatra, a younger sister of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, is expected to be the top candidate on the list, which would make her the party's prime minister candidate.

Meanwhile, Suan Dusit Poll announced that a survey found that 46% of its respondents think that the most positive results from the House dissolution will be the next election and the promotion of democracy, and 21% hoped new representatives and the new government will improve the nation.

However, they also expect negative results with 40% fearing a fierce competition and 34% concerned that it could stall national administration. Respondents also believed that political conflicts, rallies and corruption among politicians will continue after the House dissolution. (TNA)
