Thai red shirt leader plans to apply for election candidacy in prisoner outfit

BANGKOK, May 13 (TNA) - Thailand's red shirt protest leader “Jatuporn Prompan”, who is being held at the Bangkok Remand Prison since Thursday, has asked for permission to go out and apply for his Pheu Thai Party list candidacy in prisoner outfit on May 19.
Chartchai Suthiklom, director-general of the Corrections Department, said that his staff treated red shirt protest leaders Jatuporn Prompan and Nisit Sinthupraithe same as any other prisoner and they did not enjoy any privileges. Both are in jail due to the revocation of bail by the Criminal Court for offending the royal institution. During the long holiday this weekend, the prison will not be open for any family visit until May 18.
Separately, Bangkok Remand Prison chief, Sophon Thitithamphruen, said Mr Jatuporn’s request to leave the jail to apply for party list MP candidacy must be filed with the Criminal Court. The prison chief noted however, Mr Jatuporn cannot leave in a prisoner outfit, nor can he be chained, as the application for an MP candidacy is an honourable activity.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, who supervises security affairs, said that he respected the court’s order to revoke the bail for Mr Jatuporn and that he does not think it will lead to any violence during a red shirt rally on May 19. He also noted that if the Pheu Thai Party wants to win the election in a democratic manner, it should not support red shirted movements because they will surely backfire. (TNA)
