Thais give book offerings to Buddhist monks

BANGKOK, May 13 (TNA) - People and representatives of public and private agencies in Thailand presented book offerings to 99 Buddhist monks on Friday to mark the occasion of Visakha Pucha Day 2011, which falls on May 17.
Education Minister Chinnaworn Boonyakiat presided over the offering ceremony, which was the 9th of its kind and was held in front of the Amarin Plaza building near Ratchaprasong Intersection in the heart of Bangkok.
The merit making event was also organised to pay tribute to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej on the auspicious occasion of the beloved Thai monarch's 84th birthday this coming December 5.
The education minister said that these events have become increasingly popular in the Thai society, as they not only promote learning, but also develop the level of knowledge and wisdom among the public, particularly the younger generations.
According to the minister, a further 10,000 books gathered from the event will be presented to more than 120 flood-affected schools in the Thai South. (TNA)
