Moderate earthquake jolts north-western Pakistan, no casualties
Islamabad, Sept 5 PPI: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on Richter Scale shook most parts north-western Pakistan on Friday but there was no immediate report of casualties or damage, head of seismological department said.
The earthquake's epicentre was located about 300 kilometres north of Peshawar in
Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan, director general seismological department
Chaudhry Qamaruz Zaman said.
He said quake at 10.58 a.m. was also felt in parts of October 2005 devastating
earthquake, which had killed over 70,000 people and displaced around 3.5 million.
It was felt in most parts of North West Frontier Province, Pakistan administered
Kashmir and Islamabad as well as some parts of central Punjab province.
"It was a big jolt," Shafiq Inqilabi, a resident of mountainous region of Shangla in
Swat valley, said on phone. "We all family members ran away and are still outside
homes."
