DSI will call on Thai red shirt leaders to acknowledge charges of offending the royal institution

BANGKOK, May 12 (TNA) - Thailand's Department of Special Investigation (DSI) will call on leaders of the red shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) to acknowledge charges of offending the royal institution next week.

DSI director-general Tharit Pengdit said that interrogators would meet at 2pm on May 20 to prepare summons for the 18 suspects. The interrogators will also consider the Criminal Court’s order to revoke bail for red shirt protest leaders who have been charged with terrorism because the case of offences against the royal institution involved the same group of suspects.

The DSI made the movement at a time when the Criminal Court has just revoked bail for two red shirt protest leaders namely former Pheu Thai Party MP Jatuporn Prompan and Nisit Sinthuprai on Thursday for speeches which they gave during a red shirt rally on April 10 which offended the royal institution. Both are now in jail.

Mr Tharit said that the movement for the revocation of bail for Mr Jatuporn and Mr Nisit was the DSI’s responsibility and his organization was not prejudiced against the persons.

The DSI will closely monitor the behaviour of the other seven UDD leaders whose bail remains intact. It will focus on their activities during the next UDD rally on May 19. Mr Tharit warned UDD leaders not to cause any unrest or violate the law; or else, the DSI will have to seek the revocation of their bail right away.

Asked if the exercise of Section 112 of the Criminal Code (the lese majeste law) will lead to violence ahead of the next election, Mr Tharit declined to answer but said that offences against the royal institution were under the jurisdiction of the DSI, so it had to take action according to the law.
