Thai government asked to build more bunkers in border areas

BURI RAM, May 12 (TNA) - Local villagers who have been affected by recent border clashes between Thai and Cambodian soldiers have asked the Thai government to build more standardised bunkers in their communities located near the frontier with neighbouring Cambodia.

Fifty-five-year-old Lamyai na Pol, the mother of a student in Baan Kruad District of Thailand's northeastern Buri Ram Province, made the call on Thursday on behalf of all affected Thai villagers, saying that the government should urgently allocate a state budget to build the standardised bunkers in schools and villages located near the Thai-Cambodian common border for the sake of safety of local students, teachers and other villagers, as schools across the country will reopen for the new semester next week.

Lamyai acknowledged that local villagers have been panicking and fear renewed border crossfire between Thai and Cambodian soldiers pending an agreement on a permanent ceasefire between the two sides.

According to the local villager, some nine shells fell in her community during recent border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, forcing people in the area to take their children to flee to temporary shelters provided by local authorities. (TNA)
