Thailand's largest private energy firm has eye on regional top spot

BANGKOK, May 12 (TNA) - Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding Public Company Limited, Thailand's largest private energy firm, announced Thursday that the company has now set an ambitious target to become a leading power producer in the region in the coming years.

The firm's acting president, Pirawat Pumthong, said that, for the meantime, his company will continue to increase its number of energy investment projects into regional economies, including Laos, Australia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia.

Pirawat revealed that his firm now has a total power production capacity at 4,504.17 megawatts, a figure that will increase to 5,647.90 megawatts by 2018.

According to the energy executive, the Thai private sector is likely to move first by investing in a nuclear power plant in the country, after the Thai government recently announced its suspension of an official nuclear power plant development plan following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan's Northeast on March 11, which led to radiation leaks from a nuclear power plant.

Pirawat told the public of the developments of his company at a press conference--during which he also reported his firm's net profit of as high as 1.196 billion baht in the first quarter of this year. (TNA)
