Newly-proposed investment projects in Thailand on the rise

BANGKOK, May 12 (TNA) - The number of new applications for investment projects seeking the Board of Investment of Thailand’s (BOT) promotional privileges reached 582 in the first four months of this year, worth a total of 170 billion baht, displaying a 31 per cent surge compared with the corresponding period of last year.

BOI Secretary General Atchaka Sibunruang Brimble spoke of the update on Thursday, saying that the applications in this year's January-April period were for mostly metal, machinery and transport equipment production projects, followed by utility and services, and then chemical, paper and plastic projects.

Atchaka acknowledged that most of the newly-proposed projects were medium and large-scaled plans, each worth 200 million baht to one billion baht, and that more diverse projects from all industrial groups were applied for her agency's approvals of investment incentives, reflecting more confidence in Thailand, as a potential investment hub in the region, among transnational firms.

According to the BOI chief, new applications from Japanese investors also increased during the January-April 2011 period despite the massive earthquake and tsunami which hit Japan's northeastern region on March 11. (TNA)
