Court revokes bail for Thai red shirt leaders for insulting the royal institution

BANGKOK, May 12 (TNA) - The Thai Criminal Court has revoked bail for Jatuporn Prompan and Nisit Sinthuprai, leaders of the red-clad United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), stating that their past speeches had offended the royal institution and could have triggered national unrest. Deemed to have failed to honor the court’s conditions for their bail, they were taken to the Bangkok Remand Prison right away.

The court order follows a complaint from a public prosecutor who requested the revocation of bail for nine UDD leaders for breaching conditions for their temporary release. The nine are Mr Jatuporn, Mr Nisit, Weerakan Musikapong, Natthawut Saikua, Dr Weng Tojirakarn, Korkaew Pikulthong, Kwanchai Praipana, Yoswaris Chuklom, and Wiphuthalaeng Pattanapumthai. They have been charged with terrorism for public remarks delivered during the UDD’s rally in Bangkok on April 10.

The court believes that the remarks of Mr Jatuporn and Mr Nisit confused the people and that further statements could cause national unrest, so it has revoked their bail. However, substantial evidence has yet been considered to revoke the bail for seven other UDD leaders.

Meanwhile, Mr Jatuporn and Mr Nisit reportedly arrived at Bangkok Remand Prison under heavy protection by seven companies of commandoes and metropolitan police that day.

Mr Jatuporn denied he had breached his bail terms and said he will seek his bail again and appeal. However, he said he was ready to endure his jail term and insisted that he remained a candidate of the Pheu Thai Party as he had not been convicted yet.

Separately, Mr Natthawut said his group would have its lawyer file an appeal and would put in 600,000 THB each. He said that Mr Jatuporn had not breached any bail terms because the court only prohibited them from referring to acts of terrorism and that they had merely been talking about the country's situation.
