Wounded Aussie soldier's flight delayed
(AAP) A critically wounded Australian soldier's evacuation from Afghanistan to Germany has been delayed because he's unfit to fly, defence says.
Defence spokesman Brigadier Brian Dawson said the soldier left Tarin Kowt in
southern Afghanistan en route to Germany on Thursday, but during the first leg was
assessed as being too unstable to continue the journey.
After undergoing further surgery at Bagram Air Base near the Afghan capital Kabul,
the special forces soldier is now scheduled to fly to Germany on Friday night,
Brigadier Dawson said.
"Our priority at every step of this process is the soldier's wellbeing, and that
will dictate the pace of his medical evacuation," he said.
Defence has not revealed the nature of the man's injuries.
The soldier was one of nine Australian troops wounded during a Taliban ambush on
Tuesday night.
"The commanding officer of the Special Operations Task Group has met with the other
wounded soldiers and reports they are faring well and morale is high," Brigadier
Dawson said.
There was no update on the condition of those men.
Defence on Thursday said three were in serious condition and five in good or fair
condition.
