Iranian FM meets Iraqi officials amid Bahrain crisis

TEHRAN, May 11 (MNA) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi held separate talks with a number of top Iraqi officials in Baghdad on Wednesday, discussing the situation in the crisis-hit Bahrain.

During his meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Salehi said that foreign troops should withdraw from Bahrain as soon as possible.

“Holding negotiations and paying attention to the demands of the people is the best solution to the problems facing Bahrain,” Salehi stated.

“The deployment of foreign troops in Bahrain has not only not resolved the issue, but has made matters worse,” he said. “There is no military solution to the Bahrain issue.”

The Bahraini people have expressed their demands through peaceful means, and their demands should be responded to in an appropriate way, he noted.

Al-Maliki said, “If the situation in Bahrain is not dealt with tactfully, (the country) will face an uncertain and unpleasant future.”

Al-Maliki also sounded Salehi’s remarks saying The Bahraini people’s demands must be responded to properly.

He also expressed dismay at the fact that certain efforts are being made to suggest that the situation in Bahrain is a matter of discord between Shia and Sunni Muslims.

Salehi and Al-Maliki also discussed bilateral issues during the meeting.

In addition, the Iranian foreign minister attended a joint press conference with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari on Wednesday.

Since the escalation of the situation in Bahrain, Salehi has started diplomatic efforts to help alleviate the crisis in the tiny Persian Gulf kingdom.

So far Salehi has held separate telephone conversations with several regional officials and has travelled to Qatar, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Iraq to hold talks with Arab officials on the ongoing developments in the region.
