Khyber Union of Journalists, Peshawar Press Club condemn Nasrullah Afridi’s killing

Peshawar, May 11, 2011 (PPI): Khyber Union of Journalists and Peshawar Press Club has expressed deep grief over the sad demise of senior tribal journalist Nasrullah Afridi in a bomb explosion in Peshawar on Tuesday evening.

In a joint statement President of the Union Arshad Aziz Malik and General Secretary Yousuf Ali, President Peshawar Press Club Saiful Islam Saifi and general secretary Shahid Hameed strongly condemned the terrorist attack on the journalist. They said that the government has failed to protect the lives of journalists across the country despite pressing demands by the representative bodies of the media people.

Nasrullah Afridi was a senior journalist from Khyber tribal agency. He was associated with Pakistan Television and leading Urdu newspaper from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Daily Mashriq for over ten years. He is survived by five children.

Owing to threats from some specific elements Nasrullah had shifted from his native town and settled in Peshawar where he was targeted in a busiest market on the cantonment area. Explosive had been planted in his car and no sooner did he get into his car it went off badly charring his body.

Peshawar based journalists would stage a protest demonstration outside Peshawar Press Club on Thursday 11 am to condemn the brutal killing of the colleague and press the government to take measures for the protection of media persons.

Also the government is the least concerned about extending any financial assistance to the bereaved families of the media people particularly those hailing from tribal belt. Before Nasrullah over ten journalists were killed in tribal areas and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the past one year, statement concluded.
