Thai investors urged to explore promising opportunities in Laos

BANGKOK, May 11 (TNA) - Thai investors have been urged to explore more promising business opportunities in neighbouring Laos, where the economic and political situation has recently remained stable and peaceful.

Former Thai Deputy Finance Minister, Veerabhongse Ramangkura, made the suggestion on Wednesday, saying that Laos' energy sector appears to be the most promising at the moment, as their neighbour country has been targeted to become a "battery of Asia" in the foreseeable future, cushioned by its abundant energy resources and cheaper wages.

Veerabhongse assessed that it would take a long time for bilateral trade between Thailand and Cambodia, Thailand's other neighbour, to fully return to normal following the recent border rows between Thai and Cambodian troops.

Meanwhile, former Thai foreign minister, Surakiart Sathirathai, who is now President of Thailand's Saranrom Institute of Foreign Affairs, inaugurated a seminar at the Rajabhat Loei University in Thailand's Northeast to celebrate the 60th anniversary of sound diplomatic relations between Thailand and Laos, in which more than 300 participants participated, including former Thai-Lao ministers and the incumbent Lao ambassador to Thailand.
