Authorities beef-up protection for teachers in Thai South

NARATHIWAT, May 11 (TNA) - Authorities in Narathiwat, one of Thailand’s three southern border provinces plagued with insurgency, have met in a bid to improve security measures for local teachers and schools as the new school term starts this week.

Narathiwat governor, Thanon Vejjakornkanont, chaired the meeting at Imperial Hotel in Narathiwat district. Over 200 district chiefs, police, military officers, local administrators and school directors attended the meeting.

The governor urged authorities to intensify security measures for local teachers, especially on May 18th when the new school term will start. He also instructed local teachers to seek protection from security authorities whenever they leave school grounds and homes.

Numbers showed eighty percent of attacks on teachers have so far occurred outside school grounds or when they return home at unscheduled times.

Meanwhile, security authorities will man 350 danger-prone areas in the province to ensure teachers’ safety and boost their morale. (TNA)
