Thailand launches 3:1:5 strategy against drugs

BANGKOK, May 11 (TNA) - Thailand has launched a new comprehensive move against narcotics, called the “3:1:5 strategy”, under which all parties concerned will mobilise their resources to eliminate drug crises in Bangkok and five surrounding provinces, focusing on access to local people to secure their voluntary support, rather than suppressive measures.

Thai National Police Chief Police General Wichean Potphosree presided over a ceremony to launch the strategy on Tuesday, noting that police, soldiers and civilians in Bangkok and the five peripheral provinces, including Samut Prakan, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom and Samut Sakhon will, from now until September 2011, jointly work against drugs as three main operational forces.

Police General Wichean said that Assistant National Police Chief Police Lieutenant General Worapong Chiewpreecha will direct the 3:1:5 strategy and the three operational forces will be divided into 184 ad hoc units, working to eliminate narcotics in local communities in the target areas over the next three months. According to police statistics, 35 per cent of all Thailand's drug cases are reported in Bangkok and the five surrounding provinces.

The national Thai police chief acknowledged that, the 3:1:5 strategy also covers operations to reduce drug-related crime at entertainment venues and other drug-prone public gathering sites, particularly those located near education institutes. He also called on people to provide tip-offs to the authorities by calling 1386. (TNA)
