Thai firms urged to realign business strategies to ease climate change impacts

BANGKOK, May 11 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Commerce has urged local entrepreneurs to realign their business strategies to focus on environmentally-friendly or "green" goods in accordance with global attempts to ease global warming and climate change.

Srirat Ratthapana, Director-General of the ministry's Department of Trade Negotiations, made the call on Wednesday after opening a seminar on international trade and climate change in Bangkok, noting that the escalating global warming problem has been raised by the international community, which has agreed, under a UN convention on climate change, to take joint action to prevent and relieve its impacts on the global environment, economy and society.

According to the senior Thai official, developed nations have first introduced their measures to cut emissions of greenhouse gases, the main cause of the global warming problem, including new taxes imposed on non-environmentally-friendly products, resulting in greater production and operation costs for exporters, including those from Thailand and other developing economies.

The senior Thai Commerce Ministry official warned that the new import tariffs could affect competitiveness of Thai manufacturers and exporters subsequently and could lead to feared trade protectionism in international trade. Therefore, she says, Thai entrepreneurs should realign their business strategies to cope with the situation and to sustain their businesses in the long run. (TNA)
