Thai PM seeks EC for code of conduct after House dissolution

BANGKOK, May 11 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has met with the Election Commission (EC) to discuss the code of conduct for his caretaker government after House dissolution.

The commission said the interim government could continue with their work but that it had to be free of any intention to campaign for votes. This means concerned ministers need to take business leave to do so, outside their official working hours. Furthermore, ministers must now be careful with their presence at functions that may draw complaints.

By law, all ministers are obliged to Section 181 of the Thai constitution, including regulations of the Election Commission.

Separately, the commission has asked Mr Abhisit to have concerned agencies ensure order in the wake of the shooting of former MP Pracha Prasopdee on Tuesday night. The premier replied that he had already ordered the national police chief to do so.

Meanwhile, Army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha dismissed the Army’s involvement in violent incidents that occurred after House dissolution, but said that the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) would undertake intelligence operations and report the possibility of undesirable incidents to police for further action.

Gen Prayuth also said that the people would determine the future of the nation through the election and if all parties abide to their duties accordingly, the election will be able to stay clear of violence. (TNA)
