Thailand-Malaysia discuss military co-op

BANGKOK, May 11 (TNA) - Thailand and Malaysia have discussed bilateral military cooperation, covering joint exercises and intelligence services.

Thai Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-o-cha told reporters that he and his Malaysian counterpart General Datuk Zulkifeli Mohd Zin raised the issues during bilateral talks held following the latter's arrival in Bangkok Tuesday afternoon for a three-day visit.

General Prayuth said that he and his visiting Malaysian counterpart also discussed issues related to the framework of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), in which both countries are members.

Regarding Thai-Cambodian border crisis, General Prayuth quoted his visiting Malaysian counterpart as saying that he believed Bangkok and Phnom Penh could return to a negotiation table, and that Kuala Lumpur would respect any decision agreed upon by the Thai and Cambodian governments as they can be seen to be internal affairs.

The Thai army commander-in-chief did say, however, that his Malaysian counterpart proposed ASEAN help ease tension along the Thai-Cambodian border to uphold the 10-nation bloc's spirit of peaceful co-existence.

The Thai army chief then vowed to follow the Thai government's policy on strictly protecting national sovereignty and securing a reciprocal withdrawal of Thai and Cambodian troops from the contentious border area before a plan to deploy Indonesian observers there will be approved. (TNA)
