Thai Deputy PM orders protection for political candidates

BANGKOK, May 11 (TNA) - In response to the shooting of former Pheu Thai MP for Samut Prakan “Pracha Prasopdee” on Tuesday night, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said police have linked the attack to politics but it is undetermined if it is a local or national one.

Suthep also said he had instructed the national police chief to draw up a security plan to provide protection for all political candidates, especially in fiercely contested constituencies. He added that he is confident police can work to guarantee the safety of politicians without having to seek help from the military.

Asked if the shooting is a sign of a violent election, the deputy prime minister said he has no ideas but he wants authorities to take reasonable precautions to protect political candidates without any discrimination.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister and deputy Democrat Party leader, Korn Chatikavanij, said that violent incidents before the next general election would affect the confidence of other countries which are monitoring the situation in Thailand ahead of the polling. He added that violent means will not benefit anyone, and hoped that such incidents will not recur.

The finance minister also stressed that the government wanted all parties to campaign for votes in a transparent and fair manner in order to improve Thai politics. (TNA)
