Specialists in Russian philology to meet at Shanghai congress
SHANGHAI, May 11 (Itar-Tass) - The problems of the teaching of Russian
as a foreign language and ways to popularize Russian culture in the world
are to be discussed at the 12th congress of the International association
of the teachers of Russian language and literature (MAPRYAL). The congress
opens here on Wednesday. The Association brings together specialusts in
Russia philology from 78 countries.This will be the first such forum
inAsia since the Association was founded in 1967.
Lyudmila Verbitskaya, president of St Petersburg state university and
president of MAPRYAL, told journalists on Tuesday, "We hope that the
holding of the congress in China will make it possible to populrize the
studyof the Russian language in this country".
In response to a question from an Itar-Tass correspondent, Verbitskaya
acknowledged that Russia seeks, to a certain extent, to draw on Chinese
experience in popularizing national culture in the world, bearing in mind
the continuously expanding network of Confucius Institutes abroad.
"In 2007, we set up a 'Russian World' Foundation (RWF), the purposes
of which are similar to what Confucius Institutes do. Over the time that
has passed since, we opened about 100 branches of the RWF in various parts
of the world," pointed out Verbitskaya who also chairs the RWF Board of
Trustees.
Du Guizhi, Secretary-General of the Chinese Association of the
Teachers of the Russian Language and Literature, said, for her part, that
Russian remains popular enough in the People's Republic of China (PRC)
now. She said there are Russin language departments with more than 1,000
teachers and over 10,000students in 110 Chinese institutions of higher
learning.
The opening of the congress is to be attended by Farit Mukhametshin,
head of the Rossotrudnichestvo Federal Agency for CIS Affairs, Compatriots
Residing Abroad and International Humanitarian Cooperation. The Chinese
government will be represented by Liu Yandong, Member of the State Council
of the PRC.
The programme for the forum provides for a large number of speeches,
seminars and rountdtable meetings on a wide range of theoretical and
practical problems connected with the teaching and study of Russian. The
forum is to come to a close on May 14.
