Flooding crisis begins in Thai North

PHRAE, May 10 (TNA) - Flooding has become critical in many northern provinces of Thailand. A tragedy nearly took place in Phrae province when a flash flood completely submerged two ten-wheelers on a bridge.

The drivers of both trucks and almost ten workers ran for their lives when the flash flood inundated their vehicles while crossing Huay Mae Ta stream in Tambon Ta Pha Mork sub-district of Long district. The provincial office head here had inspected a dam in Lam Huay Dua stream that collapsed due to forceful currents and already arranged for it to be repaired.

In Lampang province, flash floods hit three villages in Tambon Thung Phueng sub-district of Chae Hom district in the morning. A number of communities were reportedly damaged, especially garlic and paddy that was kept on the ground underneath houses. Floods also damaged local farmland.

Local officials are speeding up their surveys on flood damage to prepare assistance for victims. They also inspected Mae Tak reservoir, which has a capacity of 900,000 cubic meters as they are concerned that it could burst, something that previously occurred in 1994. (TNA)
