Foreign policy
B A Malik - Via email
_, May 10, 2011 (Pakistan Observer): Raymond Davis, Osama bin Laden and related concomitants have once again highlighted the impotence of a foreign policy which is out of sync with the spirit of our age. Now the most critical question is where do we go from here If at all we want to move on? We don’t have to go to distant lands to find a policy which meets present day needs of the nation.
Independent foreign policy practiced by SZAB and envisioned by SBB in her 2008 Party Manifesto is a befitting response to our myriad challenges that can be transmuted into opportunities. (1) Friendly relations with India ,China ,Afghanistan and Iran must be our top priority without downgrading our ties with other countries around the world including the United States of America. ..A foreign policy which overlooks neighbours in favor of distant partnerships can be counterproductive as proved beyond reasonable doubt in our case.
(2) Foreign policy must be based on trade and commerce in lieu of ideology. A successful policy has no religion except national interest. (3) Relations with India in particular must be the corner stone of our alternative policy not only in words but also in deeds because actions speak louder than words. (4) A Treaty of Peace and Cooperation with Afghanistan must become a reality. (5) SAARC must pave the way to an Asian Common Market to replace the infrastructure of conflict with the architecture of peace.
(6) Controversy over the release of Raymond Davis and the mysterious death of Osama bin Laden should provide impetus towards a foreign policy which can help to safeguard our self respect and national independence . Terrorism is our enemy no. 1 and must be confronted accordingly .There can be no ifs and buts in this global war against the darkness of extremism.
