Thailand's newly-registered businesses on the rise

BANGKOK, May 10 (TNA) - Growing numbers of newly-registered businesses have been reported in Thailand over the past year, thanks to a recovering Thai economy.
Thai Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot spoke of the positive development on Tuesday, noting that there are now 488,088 registered business firms across the Kingdom, with 21,239 of them being newcomers during the first four months of this year, a 22 per cent increase from the corresponding period of last year.
Alongkorn said that the newly-registered businesses during the January-April 2011 period were mostly entertainment, construction and property firms, showing a steady improvement of the Thai economy with growing confidence among entrepreneurs in the local private sector.
According to the Thai deputy commerce minister, the number of businesses registered in the country last month alone stood at 5,098, a 46 per cent year-on-year increase, with a total registered capital of some 15.25 billion baht.
The Thai deputy commerce minister acknowledged, however, that there had been 2,536 revocations of business registrations during the first four months of this year, a 20 per cent increase from the same period of last year. 567 of these, he explained, worth a total of some 2.61 billion baht in capital, withdrew their businesses in April 2011 alone.
