NSC secretary-general confident of smooth election in Thailand

BANGKOK, May 10 (TNA) - Thawil Pliensri, secretary-general of Thailand’s National Security Council (NSC), said security authorities would ensure a smooth election on July 3, 2011. From his point of view, he has seen no sign of untoward incidents and believes there will be a peaceful election.
He does not think daily violent incidents in southern border provinces will affect the proceedings either. He said security authorities had well-established measures and that they have already guaranteed security in the 2007 election.
He said it was unfair to cite ongoing violent incidents as a reason to judge that government security measures in the far South totally failed. He said government officials still had much work in different to do to restore peace in the region.
Meanwhile, Pheu Thai Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit said that the list of candidates, including the party leader, for his party would be known this week. The management of the party is expected decide before Wednesday if the leading candidate will be Miss Yingluck Shinawatra or not, the younger sister of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
On Tuesday, the government had the royal decree on the House dissolution published in the Royal Gazette. The Prime Minister’s Office also announced that the House dissolution took effect from Tuesday and ended the status of House representatives, setting the date for the next general election on July 3.
