TOR on third-party observers along Thai-Cambodian border settled: Thai PM

BANGKOK, May 10 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva announced Tuesday that the terms of reference (TOR) for the deployment of third-party observers at a contentious area along the Thai-Cambodian border to ensure ceasefire have now been settled.
Abhisit confirmed that the specifics were finalised following Monday night's tripartite talks in Jakarta between Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya and his Cambodian and Indonesian counterparts, Hor Namhong and Marty Natalegawa. The PM was later informed about results of the three-way talks by the Thai foreign minister and says he will discuss the issue at a Thai Cabinet meeting next week.
The Thai premier, however, reiterated that his administration will not approve the deployment of any third-party observers along the Thai-Cambodian border unless neighbouring Cambodia withdraws its troops from the 4.6-kilometre contentious area surrounding the Preah Vihear Temple.
Premier Abhisit dismissed reports that Malaysian Deputy Foreign Minister Richard Riot Jaem had blamed Thailand for not adhering to an earlier agreement on the TORs, and that that refusal led to recent clashes between Thai and Cambodian border troops near the ancient Preah Vihear Temple. He explained that the Malaysian deputy foreign minister might not understand the updated situation following the tripartite talks on Monday night.
Meanwhile, the Thai foreign minister has reportedly agreed with his Cambodian and Indonesian counterparts on a new formula for peace aimed at trying to settle pending border issues between Thailand and Cambodia. (TNA)
