Iran not meddling in regional countries’ affairs: official

TEHRAN, May 10 (MNA) – Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has rejected claims made by certain Persian Gulf states that Iran is interfering in the regional countries’ internal affairs.

“We will never accept the claims that we are meddling in other countries’ affairs. It has no place in our foreign policy,” Mehmanparast told the Al-Alam News Network on Sunday.

Iran has only given moral support to the popular movements in the region and called for peaceful settlement of the disputes between regional nations and their governments, he said.

He went on to say, “We should hold serious talks with the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council members and should not allow untrue matters to create division.”

Undoubtedly, these negotiations will yield good results, he added.

Mehmanparast also denied the claims that Iran has a spying network which operates in the regional countries, saying it is a “serious allegation.”

“These claims are aimed at pushing ahead the Iranophobia plan,” he said.

On the ongoing developments in the Middle East and North Africa, the Foreign Ministry spokesman said the United States and the Zionist regime are seeking to divert the popular uprisings from the right path.

“Provoking discord between the regional countries and stirring up sectarian differences are part of this plot.”

“The Zionist regime and its supporters are trying to provoke Iranophobia in the region to create a rift between Iran and its Arab neighbors,” he said. “The country’s foreign diplomacy apparatus is trying to draw the regional nations’ attention to these dangers and plots.”

Mehmanparast also criticized some regional governments’ approach in dealing with their nations’ peaceful pro-democracy campaigns. “Unfortunately certain regional countries have adopted the policy of suppressing their own people instead of responding properly to their demands.”

After Iran advised them to stop suppressing their people, the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council, under pressure from certain countries, issued several statements against Iran, he stated.

Commenting on Saudi Arabia’s role in the developments in the region, he said unfortunately this country’s regional policy, especially its military intervention in Bahrain and Yemen to quell the popular uprising, has aggravated the situation.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Mehmanparast pointed to Tehran-Cairo relations and said all regional nations and the Islamic world will benefit from a good and strong relationship between Iran and Egypt.

“But the U.S. and the Zionist regime are trying to make regional countries fearful of a close ties between Iran and Egypt.”
