Australia thrashes Pakistan 5-1 in Azlan Shah Cup

Karachi, May 09, 2011 (PPI): Pakistan looked good in patches but their forwards failed to make use of the scoring opportunities as despite of getting several penalty corners they could only convert one of them against Australia, who recorded a formidable 5-1 win in Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia.

Australia kept Pakistan under pressure during the whole match as after a solid start where they made some impressive moves into the Pakistan half but goalkeeper Imran Shah saved over half a dozen goals in the space of first 20 minutes but a penalty stroke in the 23rd minute earned Australia their first goal of the match.

However, Pakistan bounced back sharply and Sohail Abbas scored off a penalty corner in the 29th minute taking the match into an equal competition.

Australia then rallied to score one more goal before the halftime when Jason Wilson made it 2-1 in the dying moments of the first half in a rather bizarre fashion.

Pakistan started well in the second half and attacked the Aussie goalpost but lacked execution which gave Australia the chance to multiply their lead as Simon Orchard made it 3-1 in the 41st minute.

Kookaburras then upped the pressure which resulted in a flurry of penalty corners where Christopher Ciriello gave Aussies their fourth goal of the match in the 51st minute.

Looking down and out, Pakistani players resigned to the situation and Aussies kept getting open spaces in Pakistan’s defences where Jason Wilson scored yet another goal in the 55th minute to take Australia to a decisive 5-1 lead.

Pakistan are now in dire straits as they will have to win their matches against India and Malaysia to keep their Sultan Azlan Shah Cup final hopes alive.
