Thai government's "first house scheme" welcomed overwhelmingly well

BANGKOK, May 9 (TNA) - A large number of people were seen lining up at the headquarters and nationwide branches of the Government Housing Bank (GHB) on Monday to apply for the Thai government's "first houses" loan project, which offers a loan with a zero per cent interest rate for the first two years.
Displaying their overwhelming support for the state initiative, some people arrived at GHB offices before dawn, making the number of qualified applicant across the country shoot to 55, just one minute after the scheme was launched at 08.30am, with a total housing value of 84 million baht before surging up to 600 in 13 minutes, with a total housing value of one billion baht.
GHB President Worawit Chailimpamontri suggested people to apply for their first-house loan with all required documents to ensure quick and transparent services, as all applications are to be forwarded to the GHB's central computerised system.
The GHB chief acknowledged that GHB has voluntarily raised the ceiling for the special loan to be provided for the people eyeing to buy their "first houses" to 40 billion baht, from 25 billion baht initially set by the government, and that the loan should be approved for each qualified application within 2-3 weeks.
Meanwhile, Thai Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij said that he was satisfied with the public warm welcome to the scheme, as more than 2,200 applications for a total housing value of over 3.4 billion baht were reported just one hour after the project was launched, and that the lending ceiling for the "first houses" scheme will probably be overall raised to 50 billion baht later.
