Applications for Thailand's first-house scheme reach over 5,600 in one day

BANGKOK, May 9 (TNA) - Applications for the Thai government's initiative to provide a special loans to first-time house buyers, through the Government Housing Bank (GHB), reached 5,650 in one day, with a total housing value of 8.55 billion baht, exceeding the government's earlier target of some 8.0 billion baht.

Speaking of the update of the scheme, which was launched at 08.30am on Monday, GHB President Worawit Chailimpamontri confirmed that the "first houses" loan project was offered to qualified applicants with a zero per cent interest rate during the first two years.

The GHB chief acknowledged that most of the applications in the first day were submitted through GHB branch offices in provincial areas, each with a value of between 1.6-2 million baht.

The GHB president said that GHB has voluntarily raised the ceiling for the special loan to 40 billion baht, from 25 billion baht initially set by the government, and that the loan will typically be approved for each qualified application within 2-3 weeks.

A large number of people had been lining up at the GHB headquarters at its nationwide branches since around 04:00am on Monday to apply for the Thai government's "first houses" loan project, an apparent sign of their overwhelming welcome for the state initiative. (TNA)
