Thailand officially proposes to host "World Expo 2020"

BANGKOK, May 9 (TNA) - Thailand has officially proposed to host the World Expo 2020 under the theme of "sustainable ways toward a balanced world: a new definition of the globalisation era".

Akkapol Sorasuchart, President of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), said on Monday that Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has already signed to have Thailand offer to host the World Expo, from January 15-June 15, 2020. The decision was made based on a Thai Cabinet resolution passed on April 4, 2011.

Akkapol revealed that the Thai government has proposed the central Ayutthaya Province, Thailand's old capital, as the venue of the six-month world event in 2020, and that Thai Deputy Prime Minister Major General Sanan Kajornprasart, who oversees TCEB, will fly to Paris next week to discuss the proposal with the Bureau of International Expositions (BIE) on May 16. Following that, further steps will be taken to seek support for the Thai proposal from more than 157 BIE member economies from across the world, including a strategic lobby collectively conducted through national-level channels of all concerned Thai agencies.

Meanwhile, Ayutthaya Governor Wittaya Phiewphong said that the public and private sectors there are collaborating to prepare for the potential hosting, and have begun work on promotional campaigns to demonstrate the old Thai capital's most outstanding tourist sites, unified traditions as well as the peaceful and well-mixed ways of life of local people from a variety of races, religions and cultures.

The governor noted that the development of an appropriate area for the venue of the World Expo 2020, probably Bang Sai District, will be based on a logical framework with a priority being that it is in an urban zone close to Bangkok and can be part of "outer Bangkok", under a future plan to expand Thailand's metropolitan areas.
