New senate speaker expects better Thai politics after election

BANGKOK, May 9 (TNA) - A ceremony was held on Monday for the royal appointment of General Teeradet Meepian as Thailand’s new Senate Speaker.

Deputy Senate Speakers Nikhom Waiyaratchapanich and Porntip Lohveera, along with other senators and members of the Senate secretariat, also attended the morning event at the parliament.

After the ceremony, Gen Teeradet told reporters that he was not worried about becoming the Senate Speaker while the House was to be dissolved. He also pledged to serve by duty, to enforce the law, and build on existing works of the Senate, and encouraged all Senators to do their best.

Asked to comment on the state of Thai politics, Gen Teeradet said the next election should take place smoothly and that things would improve afterwards; or else the nation will not be able to progress.

Regarding doubts whether the Senate would be able to maintain checks and balances with the executive branch should the Pheu Thai Party conquer the next election, Gen Teeradet declined them as pure speculation. He noted there would no problems if the Pheu Thai Party was elected in line with democratic principles and the law.

The Senate Speaker added he was not a professional politician but only wanted to see democracy, reconciliation and unity in the nation. (TNA
