RI, GUANGDONG TRADE VALUE PROJECTED TO REACH US$10 BILLION

Jakarta, Sept 4 (ANTARA) - Bipartite trade value between Indonesia and Guangdong province in China is projected to rise by US$10 billion in the next three years, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said here on Thursday.

"In a meeting between a Guangdong delegation and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the presidential office in the morning, the target of the trade value with the Chinese province is said to be raised by US$10 billion in the next three years," Pangestu said after accompanying a Chinese Communist Party delegation from Guangdong to meet with President Yudhoyono.

She said based on strategic partnership agreement which was signed by Indonesia and China in 2005, the trade value between the two countries was projected to reach US$20 billion in 2008 and US$30 billion in 2010.

"The trade value between the two countries at present, especially with Guangdong, has exceeded the total target, or at least 20 percent," Pangestu said.

Therefore, she said the government continued to encourage the increase of the trade value with Guangdong.

"If the investment is increased, the trade will be automatically increased," she said, adding that Indonesia at present was exporting palm oil and coal to China and importing garment from Guangdong.

"Thus, we are importing half-made garments from Guangdong and then processed here before exporting them to the United States and Europe," Pangestu added.

She said the visit to Indonesia by the delegation from Guangdong province was to accompany some 400 Chinese businessmen to explore possible trade and investment between Indonesia and China.

"They also need our agricultural products such as palm oil, coal, and gas because they need energy," Pangestu said, adding that the Chinese businessmen were interested in investing in the infrastructure field.

The Chinese Communist Party's central committee member for Guandong, Wan Yan, and his entourage arrived at the presidential office at 11 in the morning and directly made a dialog with the Indonesian head of state.

Wan Yan's entourage was made up of Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Zhang Quyue, Chinese Foreign Ministry's director general for Guandong, Fu Lang, and Chinese Communist Party vice secretary for Guandong, Liu Yupu, and several other party officials.

The delegation from China was accompanied by Indonesian Ambassador to China Sudrajat.

In the meeting with the Chinese Communist Party delegation, President Yudhoyono was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Widodo AS, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa and Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi.
