Documentary made about late war veteran Vasily Kononov

MOSCOW, May 9 (Itar-Tass) -- Under the Our Victory project a
documentary was made about the late veteran of the Great Patriotic War and
the former guerilla, Vasily Kononov, who had sued the Latvian authorities
for many years.
On Sunday, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev met with the war veterans
and members of military and patriotic organizations, the youth movement
Nashi passed to the president a DVD with a video interview of Kononov. 40
days will pass after his death on May 9. The Nashi leader Maria
Kislitsyna hopes that the documentary about Kononov will be shown on a
federal television channel.
"We have shot this film from the video archives of the recollections
of the war veterans that was created under the Our Victory federal
project," Kislitsyna said. The project, which the Nashi movement and the
Federal Agency for Youth Affairs have been implementing since 2010,
envisages the creation of a major video archives. More than 10,000
interviews with the war veterans of the Great Patriotic War have already
been recorded.
Vasily Kononov died at the age of 89 years on March 31, 2011. The
former guerilla has sued with the Latvian authorities for many years.
Latvia accused him of war crimes. The Riga court found that in 1944
Kononov was participating in an extermination action in the village of
Malye Baty against civilians. The war veteran stated that people executed
there were Nazi abettors.
