MOSCOW, May 8 (Itar-Tass) - One of Russia's most celebrated classical
music groups, the Tchaikovsky Grand Symphony Orchestra is expected to
perform at a festival in the Italian city of Vrescia Sunday.
The concert is part of the program of the Year of Russia in Italy and
Italy in Russia and the festival where the Tchaikovsky Orchestra will play
is dedicated to Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, one of the greatest
pianists of the 20th century standing in the same category as Svyatoslav
Richter, Emil Gilels, Vladimir Gorovitz, and Glenn Gould.
Margarita Melnikova, the orchestra's press secretary told Itar-Tass
the goal of the annual festival in Brescia is to "enlighten the audiences
with the treasures of world musical heritage.
Traditionally, the festival lasts from April through to June and its
concerts are held in Italy's nicest concert halls.
In different years, the Soviet Union and/or Russia were represented
there by Svyatoslav Richter, Vladimir Ashkenazi, Natalya Gutman, Vladimir
Spivakov, and others.
The list of renowned orchestras that have performed in the festival
includes the London Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the
National Orchestra of France, among others.
May 9, when Russia marks VE-Day, the Tchaikovsky Orchestra will give a
concert consisting of Gustav Mahler and Ferenc Liszt's works.
Founded in 1930, it has been known across the world in the past as

During World War II, it had an important spiritual mission, as it
performed classical music over the radio in what was known as concerts for
the frontline.
Violinists David Oistrach and Leonid Kogan, Emil Gilels, opera star
Irina Arkhipova and other acclaimed performers cooperated with the
Tchaikovsky orchestra for many years and composers Sergei Prokofyev,
Dmitry Shostakovich, Aram Khachatourian, and Georgy Sviridov entrusted the
premiere renditions of their new works.
For about 40 years, the chief conductor of the orchestra is maestro
Vladimir Fedoseyev, whose record in art includes a variety of experience.
