Maliki calls for activating cooperation with the US after the withdrawal

Baghdad (NINA) - Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki stressed on the need to activate the paths of cooperation between Iraq and the US in various fields after the American withdrawal from Iraq.

A statement issued by Maliki's office quoted him for saying, during a meeting with a delegation of U.S. congressmen led by former Speaker of the U.S. congress and leader of the Democratic minority in the current one, Nancy Pelosi, "our success in the face of terrorism and defeat the biggest wave of terrorist acts in the world should lead us to achieve successes in other areas," calling for the activation of cooperation in the aspects identified by the Strategic Framework Agreement.

On the developments in the region, Maliki said "all the changes taking place in the region confirm the peoples’ ability and their insistence on making the future of their countries on their own, and that the era of dictatorships and authoritarianism, coups and seizing power by force had ended, and now it is time for peaceful transition of power, that comes through the ballot box.”

For their part, members of the delegation, called for strengthening relations between Iraq and the US, hailing the ability of Iraqi forces to impose security and face up to the challenges, confirming the willingness of the Congress to activate cooperation with Iraq in all fields.

The President of the Democratic Party, Nancy Pelosi, arrived in Baghdad this morning with a delegation of Republican and Democratic parties "to assess progress in the redeployment of forces, and to meet with Iraqi and U.S. officials."
