MORE SURVEILLANCE ALONG KELANTAN-THAI BORDER

KOTA BAHARU (Malaysia), Sept 4 (Bernama) -- Police are stepping up surveillance along the Kelantan-Thai border to check the illegal entry of immigrants from Thailand following the unrest in the country.

Kelantan deputy police chief SAC II Amir Hamzah Ibrahim said so far there
was no major influx of immigrants from Thailand.

"We are monitoring the situation closely and so far there is no indication
of an influx of Thai immigrants," he told Bernama.

He said stringent checks were carried out at the border to prevent
undesirable elements, who could pose a threat to national security, from
entering the country.

Amir asked Malaysians intending to travel to Thailand to postpone their
journey until the situation returned to normal.

Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej invoked emergency rule in Bangkok
Wednesday to quash intensifying street protests against his seven-month old
administration.
