Thai government mulling to build new deep sea port

BANGKOK, May 7 (TNA) - The Thai government has tentatively insisted to go ahead with a plan to construct a new deep sea port in the country's southern Satun Province and is conducting a feasibility study on the project.
Thai authorities concerned have acknowledged that the newly-proposed deep sea port will benefit local communities without harmful impacts, as it will create at least 1,800 jobs and spur the local economy. In addition, local residents will also have their say on the port management.
However, the project on building the deep sea port at Pak Bara in Satun has faced objection from local residents; so, members of a committee on public participation consisting of representatives of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) will be visiting a number of ports in neighbouring Malaysia for a field study soon to gather information on possible impacts from the project on local people’s livelihood, fishery and the environment before making its final recommendation to the public.
