Thai PM joins 18th ASEAN Summit

BANGKOK, May 7 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is now attending the 18th ASEAN Summit, which kicked off in Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, Saturday morning.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono inaugurated the ASEAN summit 2011, scheduled for May 7-8, saying that ASEAN has been growing rapidly and the world community is now setting their eyes on the 10-nation bloc, which has survived in the recent global economic crisis.
The Indonesian President noted that many countries have proposed to become economic partnership with ASEAN, which has already established trade partnership with several large economies across the world, including China and India.
President Yudhoyono also insisted on the importance of joint efforts of member countries to materialize a regional integration plan in the form of the ASEAN Community by 2015, saying that as the current chair of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Indonesia expects that this year's summit and related forums will bring significant progress toward the ASEAN Single Community.
Topics expected to be discussed at this year's ASEAN summit include Thai-Cambodian border issues, territorial disputes in the South China Sea, East Timor's bid to become a new ASEAN member, food security and cross-border crime, namely human and drug trafficking.
The Indonesian President acknowledged that the ongoing ASEAN summit is also essential to prepare for the upcoming East Asia Summit (EAS), which will pave the way for bringing about greater roles of ASEAN in the international community.
The annual East Asia Summit is an economic and regional cooperation forum of 16 member countries, including 10 ASEAN member states, Japan, South Korea, China, New Zealand, Australia and India. The United States and Russia will also join this year's EAS, set to be also held in Jakarta. (TNA)
