PM expects Thai-Cambodian talks during ASEAN summit

BANGKOK, May 6 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Friday that he expects Thai-Cambodian issues to be raised during the 18th ASEAN Summit and related meetings, set to be held in Jakarta from May 7-8.
Speaking to reporters before flying to the Indonesian capital Friday afternoon, Abhisit acknowledged that this year's ASEAN summit will, however, focus on the progress of the establishment of the ASEAN Community by 2015 and roles of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the world community, and that he believes his government, despite its caretaker status shortly, can fully support the 10-nation ASEAN bloc.
Premier Abhisit insisted that the Thai government has placed importance on the establishment of the ASEAN Community and the roles of ASEAN in the world community, and that Thailand is playing important roles in pushing for the formation of the ASEAN Community, especially for connections among member states--which have made good progress.
According to the Thai leader, Bangkok is also pushing for ASEAN’s collective efforts to cope with disasters, cross-border human trafficking and other transnational crime and is also promoting regional free trade cooperation in the frameworks of ASEAN+3 and ASEAN+6, as well as similar cooperation with other potential trading partners.
The Thai premier revealed that this year's ASEAN summit will include the signing of an ASEAN agreement on disaster-related cooperation, as ASEAN has faced several forms of natural disaster, namely storms, earthquakes, floods and drought.
Regarding possible bilateral talks between Thailand and Cambodia, Abhisit said that foreign ministers of both countries were expected to hold talks for certain extent before the ASEAN summit, and that he will wait to see the level of other ASEAN members’ attention to the Thai-Cambodian issues.
As Thailand is scheduled to have bilateral talks with Laos, Vietnam and Indonesia, the Thai premier noted, however, that Thailand may raise the Thai-Cambodian issues during the talks. Abhisit said that ASEAN will probably follow up the overall situation along the Thai-Cambodian border and Indonesia, as the current chair of ASEAN, has monitored the Thai-Cambodian border situation closely.
