Top Vic cop orders deputy commissioner out
SYDNEY (AAP) - Victoria Police deputy commissioner Sir Ken Jones has been ordered to leave his office immediately by chief Simon Overland.
Sir Ken had announced his resignation earlier this week, planning to finish up in August, but was told to pack up immediately in a meeting with Mr Overland on Friday.
"The Chief Commissioner has asked Sir Ken Jones to finish at the end of today because it is right for both him and Victoria Police," police said in a statement.
"He will be taking existing leave and finishing with the organisation, as per his email to staff earlier this week, on Friday, 5 August."
"Deputy Commissioner Ken Lay will take over the role as of Monday.
"In light of a number of senior appointments that need to be made, as well as other issues the Chief Commissioner has decided not to take leave as planned from the end of next week."
Speculation had mounted recently over the strained relationship between Mr Overland and Sir Ken, who was appointed Deputy Commissioner (Crime) for Victoria Police in 2009 after a distinguished career in the UK.
