Rehearsal of Thailand's royal ploughing ceremony held

BANGKOK, May 6 (TNA) - A dress rehearsal of Thailand's royal ploughing ceremony took place at Sanam Luang ceremonial ground in Bangkok on Friday.
The Thai Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives organized the rehearsal of the annual royal ploughing ceremony at 8am, with Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives Chalermporn Piroonsarn being the plougher. He walked with ceremonial porters during the rehearsal, also attended by all concerned officials.
The pair of royal cows for this year’s ceremony is named “Phra Kho Fa” and “Phra Kho Sai”; while “Phra Kho Therd” and “Phra Kho Toon” are there back-up.
Thai Deputy Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives Niwat Sutheemeechaikul said that all elements are now ready for the ceremony, including security authorities, the healthy royal cows and rice seeds supplied from royal paddy fields in the Chitrlada Palace in the Thai capital. A total of 1,799 kilograms of local paddy of seven lowland rice strains and three upland rice strains will be used at this year's event next week.
The royal ploughing ceremony is a long-standing Thai ceremony, considered very important for local farmers in particular. Like previous years, the ceremony this year will take place on two days. On May 12, which is Farmers’ Day, a Buddhist ceremony will be held at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha inside the Grand Palace. On May 13, there will be the Brahmin ceremony of the royal ploughing at the renovated Sanam Luang ceremonial ground adjacent to the Grand Palace. (TNA)
