Thai PM to attend ASEAN summit in Jakarta

BANGKOK, May 6 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is scheduled to fly to Jakarta this Friday afternoon to attend the 18th ASEAN Summit and related meetings in the Indonesian capital.

Abhisit told reporters on Friday that, so far, he has had no schedule to hold bilateral talks with his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen on the sidelines of this year's ASEAN summit, but he will meet with regional leaders of other countries.

The Thai premier said, however, that recent border clashes between Thai and Cambodian soldiers will be raised at the two-day ASEAN summit.

Meanwhile, reports from Indonesia, the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), said that food and energy security issues are among topics to be discussed at this year's ASEAN summit in Jakarta, set from May 7-8.

Indonesia’s Cabinet Secretary Dipo Alam acknowledged that recent food and energy price hikes, partly caused by climate change and population growth, have captured regional and global attention, as the volatility of the energy and food prices on the world market appears to be a global risk with major impacts subsequently, namely those on inflation and people's purchasing power, particularly the poor.

According to the Indonesian Cabinet secretary, a recent survey, titled Global Risk 2011 and published by the World Economic Forum, showed that water, food and security were three main global risks, along with macroeconomic imbalances and illegal economies. (TNA)
